Grass Roots spends time at the grassroots of women’s football, where the game is as much about connection and belonging as what happens on the pitch.

The film centres on Clare Piper and the Club Local girls in Islington, who I loved for their openness and absence of ego. It wasn’t about being the best player, but simply turning up, getting involved and finding confidence and connection through playing together.

Grass Roots is a celebration of sport as a place to belong, to push yourself, and most importantly, to have a really good time.
